Get a heavy motorcycle license – A license

Driving a heavy motorcycle is a dream for many motorcycle enthusiasts. With the A license, you can drive all motorcycles, regardless of power or displacement. Here we go over what is required to get an A license and what the training includes.

What is an A license?

With an A license, you can drive:

  • Heavy motorcycle: All motorcycles, regardless of displacement or power.
  • Three-wheeled motorcycle: With an output of over 15 kW.

Age limit:

  • 24 years to take A-license directly.
  • 20 years if you have had A2-license for at least two years (upgrade required through a new driving test).

How do I apply for a driving license permit?

To take a driving license for a heavy motorcycle, you need a driving license permit. Here's how:

  1. Apply via the Swedish Transport Agency Go to the Swedish Transport Agency's e-service for driving license permits and fill in your health declaration.

  2. Have an eye examination An eye examination must be done by an optician or doctor, and the results are sent directly to the Swedish Transport Agency.

What does the training for heavy motorcycles include?

The training for the A-license consists of both theory and practice, designed to prepare you to drive a heavy motorcycle safely and effectively:

  • Theoretical training:

  • Vehicle knowledge and maneuvering: Learn about the design and function of a heavy motorcycle.

  • Road safety: Risks and strategies for preventing accidents.

  • Environment: How your driving affects the environment and tips for driving fuel-efficiently.

  • Traffic rules: Laws and regulations that apply to motorcycle traffic.

  • Personal conditions: How, for example, fatigue, stress and alcohol affect driving ability.

  • Practical training:

  • Maneuvering: Exercises on the track, such as low-speed maneuvering, braking and evasive maneuvers.

  • Driving in traffic: Training in real traffic situations, including city driving, country roads and motorways.

  • Risk training for motorcycles:

  • Riskettan MC (part 1): A theoretical training on risk behaviors.

  • Risktvåan MC (part 2): A practical training that focuses on creating an understanding of the risks when driving under difficult conditions, such as at high speed or in poor road conditions.

Both Riskettan and Risktvåan must be completed and valid before you can take the theory test or the driving test.

What is included in the driving test?

The driving test for A-license is divided into two parts:

  1. Knowledge test (theory test) The theoretical test is conducted at the Swedish Transport Administration and consists of:
  • Number of questions: 70 questions, of which 5 are test questions that are not included in the result.
  • Pass result: At least 52 correct answers are required.
  • Time limit: 50 minutes.
  1. Driving test (run-in) The driving test consists of:
  • Maneuvering test on track: This tests your skills in handling the motorcycle safely, such as low-speed maneuvering, braking and evasive maneuvers.
  • Driving in traffic: You show that you can drive safely in different traffic situations, such as in an urban environment and on the road.

Upgrade from A2 to A

If you already have an A2 license, you can upgrade to an A license after two years of holding it, which makes this possible already at the age of 20. The upgrade requires a new driving test, but the theory test does not need to be retaken if it is still valid.
