What is the D1E license?
With a D1E license you are allowed to drive:
- Medium-sized buses that are designed to transport a maximum of 16 passengers in addition to the driver and have a length between 5 and 8 meters.
- Trailers without weight restrictions attached to these buses.
This license is particularly useful for:
- Tourist trips: When additional luggage space is needed for smaller groups.
- School buses with equipment: For transporting students together with larger equipment.
- Association transport: When both passengers and heavy equipment need to be transported.
How do I apply for a driver's license permit?
To obtain a D1E licence, you need a driving licence for group 3. Here's how:
-
Apply via the Swedish Transport Agency
Visit the Swedish Transport Agency's e-service for driving licences and fill out a health declaration.
-
Medical certificate
A medical certificate is required to show that you meet the medical requirements. The certificate is sent directly to the Swedish Transport Agency by the doctor.

The training for D1E licence includes both theory and practice:

- Vehicle knowledge: Knowledge of the design and function of buses and trailers.
- Load securing: How to secure the load both in the bus and in the trailer.
- Traffic safety: Identification and management of risks when driving with vehicle combinations.
- Environment: Techniques for environmentally friendly driving and reduced fuel consumption.

- Pass result: At least 44 correct answers are required to pass.
- Time limit: 40 minutes.
The test covers topics such as vehicle knowledge, load securing, traffic regulations and the environment.
What is included in the driving test?
The driving test consists of three parts:
-
Safety check
You show that you can carry out a systematic check of the functions of both the bus and the trailer, including coupling.
-
Manoeuvring
You demonstrate the ability to manoeuvre the vehicle combination, including reversing and parking.
-
Driving in traffic
You drive in different traffic environments to show that you can handle the vehicle combination safely and efficiently.
