Supervisor training – For those who want to practice driving privately

Supervisor training is mandatory for supervisors and students who want to practice driving privately. Learn more about the requirements and how to book the course.

Supervisor training – Introductory training for private practice driving

If you want to practice driving privately for a passenger car (B driving license), both you as a student and your supervisor must undergo supervisor training, also called introductory training. This training is a requirement from the Swedish Transport Agency and aims to make private practice driving both safe and effective.

What is instructor training?

Instructor training is a mandatory course that both the instructor and the student must complete before private practice driving can begin. The training is at least three hours long and includes:

  • The goal of the driver's license training – What is required to get a driver's license and how the training is structured.
  • Rules for private practice driving – What requirements apply to the instructor and student and how to drive.
  • Planning the practice drive – How the instructor can create an effective learning environment and help the student develop.
  • Road safety and the environment – How to drive in a safe and environmentally friendly way.

Who must take the instructor training?

Both the instructor and the student must complete the instructor training before they can practice driving privately. However, it is not necessary that they take the training together or at the same time.

A supervisor only needs to complete the training once, even if he or she is going to drive with several students. The training is valid for five years.

Requirements for supervisors and students

To be approved as a supervisor, you must:

  • Be at least 24 years old.
  • Have had a driving license for at least five of the last ten years.
  • Have a valid Swedish driving license or a driving license from another EEA country.
  • Have completed a supervisor training.

The student must:

  • Be at least 15 years and 9 months old to complete the supervisor training.
  • Have a valid driver's license permit before the practice driving can begin.

After completing the supervisor training

When both the supervisor and student have completed the supervisor training, the supervisor must apply for supervision for each student with the Swedish Transport Agency. The supervisor may not conduct private practice driving with the student until the application has been approved.

Does everyone need to complete the supervisor training?

The instructor training only applies to practice driving with a passenger car (B driving license). For other licenses, such as motorcycles (A), trucks (C) or buses (D), no instructor training is required.

If the student already has a B driving license but wants to take extended B license (B96) or lift automatic conditions, no instructor training is required either.
