Get a light motorcycle license (A1)

Driving a light motorcycle (A1) is a popular choice for young riders who want to experience the freedom of two wheels. The A1 license gives you the opportunity to drive a light motorcycle and is the first step towards a heavier motorcycle license. Here we go over what is required to get a light motorcycle license and what the training looks like.

What is the light motorcycle license (A1)?

With the A1 license you are allowed to drive:

  • Light motorcycle: Motorcycles with a displacement of no more than 125 cubic centimeters, a power of no more than 11 kilowatts and a power/weight ratio that does not exceed 0.1 kW/kg.
  • Moped class I and class II: You are also allowed to drive mopeds in both classes.
  • Tractor and motorized implement class II: The license includes these vehicles, which makes it useful even outside of a motorcycle context.

The age limit for obtaining an A1 license is 16 years.

How do I apply for a driving license permit for a light motorcycle?

To obtain a driving license for a light motorcycle (A1), you need a driving license permit. Here's how:

  1. Apply via the Swedish Transport Agency Visit the Swedish Transport Agency's e-service for driving license and fill out a health declaration.

  2. Perform an eye examination The eye examination must be performed by an optician or doctor, and the results are sent directly to the Swedish Transport Agency.

Training for light motorcycles (A1)

To obtain a driving license for a light motorcycle, both theoretical and practical training is required:

  • Theoretical training:

  • Traffic rules for motorcycles.

  • Vehicle knowledge: How a light motorcycle works and is maintained.

  • Road safety: Risks and safety aspects for motorcyclists.

  • Environment: How your driving affects the environment and tips for driving environmentally friendly.

  • Personal conditions: How factors such as fatigue, stress and alcohol affect your driving.

  • Practical training:

  • Maneuvering on the track: Low-speed maneuvering, braking and evasive maneuvers.

  • Driving in traffic: Apply your skills in real traffic situations.

  • Risk training for light motorcycles:

  • Riskettan MC (part 1): A theoretical training on risks in traffic

  • Risktvåan MC (part 2): A practical training that focuses on creating an understanding of the risks when driving in difficult conditions, such as at high speed or in poor road conditions.

Both risk trainings must be approved before you can take the driving test.

What is included in the driving test for light motorcycles?

The driving test for light motorcycles (A1) consists of two parts:

  1. Knowledge test (theory test) The theory test is taken at the Swedish Transport Administration and contains:
  • Number of questions: 70 questions, of which 5 are test questions that are not counted in the result.
  • Maximum score: 65 points.
  • Pass result: At least 52 correct answers are required.
  • Time limit: 50 minutes.

The test tests your knowledge of traffic rules, road safety and motorcycle-specific situations.

  1. Driving test (driving in) The driving test consists of:
  • Maneuvering test on the track: Here you show that you can handle the motorcycle at low speed, braking and evasive maneuvers.
  • Driving in traffic: You show that you can drive safely in different traffic situations, including cornering and driving in heavy traffic.

Upgrading to a higher qualification

If you later want to take the A2 (medium-sized motorcycle) qualification, you can do so from the age of 18. Then only a new driving test is required, since the theory test has already been passed and is valid.

If you want to take the A (heavy motorcycle) qualification, you can do so from the age of 24 (or 20 if you have had A2 for at least two years). This requires a new driving test with a heavy motorcycle.
