Get a heavy truck driving license – C qualification

Driving a heavy truck requires C qualification. Here we go over what is required to get this driving license and what opportunities it gives you.

What is C qualification?

With a C driving license you are allowed to drive:

  • Heavy trucks and passenger cars without weight restrictions.

  • Light trailers with a maximum total weight of 750 kg.

C qualification is necessary for those who want to drive heavy vehicles professionally or privately. If you plan to drive with heavier trailers, you need a CE qualification. For medium-duty trucks, a C1 qualification may be an alternative.

How do I apply for a driving license?

To get a heavy truck driving license, you need a driving license for group 2. Here's how:

  1. Apply via the Swedish Transport Agency Visit the Swedish Transport Agency's e-service for driving license and fill out the application.

  2. Medical certificate You need a medical certificate that shows that you meet the medical requirements. The medical certificate is sent directly to the Swedish Transport Agency by the doctor.

What does the training for heavy trucks include?

The training for C qualification includes both theoretical and practical elements:

  • Theoretical training:

  • Vehicle knowledge: Learn about the design and function of the truck.

  • Load securing: How to secure the load safely.

  • Traffic safety: Identify and manage risks in traffic.

  • Environment: Understand how your driving affects the environment and how you can reduce emissions.

  • Traffic regulations: Rules and laws that apply to heavy vehicles.

  • Personal conditions: How factors such as fatigue and stress affect your driving.

  • Practical training:

  • Safety check: Check the condition of the vehicle before driving.

  • Manoeuvring: Practice handling the vehicle in different situations.

  • Driving in traffic: Apply your knowledge in a real traffic environment.

What is included in the knowledge test?

The knowledge test (theory test) is conducted at the Swedish Transport Administration and consists of:

  • Number of questions: 60 questions, of which 5 are test questions that are not counted in the result.
  • Maximum points: 55 points.
  • Pass score: At least 44 correct.
  • Time limit: 40 minutes.

The test covers areas such as vehicle knowledge, traffic rules, traffic safety, the environment and personal circumstances.

What is included in the driving test?

The driving test consists of:

  1. Safety check You show that you can check the vehicle's lighting, tires, brakes and other important functions.

  2. Manoeuvring You demonstrate your ability to manoeuvre the vehicle, including reversing and parking.

  3. Driving in traffic You drive in different traffic environments to show that you can handle the vehicle safely and efficiently.

What are the age limits?

  • 21 years: To take a C licence you must be 21 years old.

  • 18 years: You can take the licence at the age of 18 if you are training to drive goods transport.

There are also other qualifications for trucks:

  • C1 – Medium-duty truck: For vehicles with a total weight of up to 7,500 kg.
  • C1E – Medium-duty truck with heavy trailer: For C1 vehicles with trailers where the total weight does not exceed 12,000 kg.
  • CE – Heavy truck with heavy trailer: For C vehicles with trailers without weight restrictions.
