What is D1 licensing?

With a D1 driving license you are allowed to drive:

  • Medium-sized buses that are designed to carry a maximum of 16 passengers in addition to the driver and have a maximum length of 8 meters.
  • Light trailers with a maximum total weight of 750 kg.

The license is particularly useful for:

  • School buses: For drivers transporting children in smaller buses.
  • Tourist tours: For smaller tourist groups traveling by bus.
  • Private transport: For associations or families that own a smaller bus.

How do I apply for a driving license permit?

To obtain a D1 licence, you need a driving licence for group 3. Here's how:

  1. Apply via the Swedish Transport Agency Visit the Swedish Transport Agency's e-service for driving licences and fill out a health declaration.

  2. Medical certificate A medical certificate is required to show that you meet the medical requirements. The certificate is sent directly to the Swedish Transport Agency by the doctor.

What does the training include?

The training for D1 licence includes both theoretical and practical elements:

Theoretical training

  • Vehicle knowledge: How medium-sized buses are designed and function.
  • Load securing: How to secure passengers' luggage.
  • Traffic safety: How to identify and manage risks in traffic.
  • Environment: How to drive fuel-efficiently and reduce emissions.
  • Traffic rules: Specific rules for medium-sized buses.

Practical training

  • Safety check: Checking the condition of the vehicle before driving.
  • Manoeuvring: Practice driving, reversing and parking.
  • Driving in traffic: Handling different traffic environments safely.

What is included in the knowledge test?

The knowledge test is conducted by the Swedish Transport Administration and consists of:

  • Number of questions: 60 questions, of which 5 are test questions that do not count.
  • Pass result: At least 44 correct answers are required to pass.
  • Time limit: 40 minutes.

The test covers topics such as vehicle knowledge, traffic rules, traffic safety and the environment.

What is included in the driving test?

The driving test consists of three parts:

  1. Safety check You show that you can control the bus's functions, including brakes, lighting and tires.

  2. Manoeuvring You demonstrate that you can handle the bus by reversing, turning and parking.

  3. Driving in traffic You drive in different traffic environments to show that you can handle the vehicle safely.

What requirements and age limits apply?

To obtain a D1 driving license, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Driving license with B-authorization: You must already have a valid B-driving license.

  • Minimum age: 21 years (or 18 years if training to become a professional driver).

  • Driving license permit: You must have a permit for group 3.

  • Passed test: You must pass both the knowledge test and the driving test.

If D1 does not suit your needs, there are other options:

  • D1E – Medium bus with heavy trailer: For D1 vehicles with trailers where the trailer exceeds 750 kg.
  • D – Bus: For larger buses without restrictions on passenger numbers or length.
  • DE – Bus with heavy trailer: For large buses with heavy trailers.
