Get a driving license for a medium-duty truck with a heavy trailer – C1E license

The C1E license gives you the right to drive medium-duty trucks together with trailers that together have a total weight of up to 12,000 kg. It is a flexible driving license that suits professional drivers and private individuals who need to drive vehicle combinations. Here we go through everything you need to know about getting a C1E license.

What is C1E license?

With a C1E driving license you are allowed to drive:

  • Medium-duty trucks and passenger cars with a maximum gross vehicle weight of 7,500 kg.

  • Trailers where the combined gross vehicle weight of the vehicle and trailer is no more than 12,000 kg.

The license is particularly useful in situations such as:

  • Horse transport: For horse owners who combine a medium-duty vehicle with a heavier trailer.

  • Motorhomes with trailers: For motorhome owners who need to tow larger trailers.

  • Work and contracting: For professional drivers who combine medium-duty trucks with extra cargo space in a trailer.

How do I apply for a driving license permit?

To obtain a C1E licence, you need a driving licence for group 2. Here's how:

  1. Apply via the Swedish Transport Agency Visit the Swedish Transport Agency's e-service for driving licences and fill out a health declaration.

  2. Medical certificate A medical certificate is required to show that you meet the medical requirements. The certificate is sent directly to the Swedish Transport Agency by the doctor.

What does the C1E training include?

The C1E training includes both theory and practical elements:

Theoretical training

  • Vehicle knowledge: Understand the design and function of the trailer.
  • Load securing: How to secure the load both in the vehicle and on the trailer.
  • Road safety: Risks of driving with a trailer and how to prevent them.
  • Environment: Techniques for driving more fuel-efficiently.
  • Road traffic regulations: Rules and requirements for driving vehicle combinations.

Practical training

  • Safety check: Checking the vehicle and trailer before driving.
  • Maneuvering: Training in reversing, turning and parking with a trailer.
  • Driving in traffic: Handling traffic situations with vehicle combinations.

What is included in the knowledge test?

The knowledge test (theory test) is conducted at the Swedish Transport Administration. It consists of:

  • Number of questions: 60 questions, of which 5 are test questions that are not counted.
  • Pass result: At least 44 correct answers are required to pass.
  • Time limit: 40 minutes.

The test tests vehicle knowledge, load securing and traffic rules, among other things.

What is included in the driving test?

The driving test consists of three parts:

  1. Safety check You show that you can check the condition of the vehicle and trailer.

  2. Manoeuvring You demonstrate that you can reverse, couple and handle the trailer.

  3. Driving in traffic You drive in different traffic environments and show that you can handle the vehicle safely.

If C1E does not suit your needs, you can consider:

  • C1 – Medium-duty truck: For trucks up to 7,500 kg without a heavy trailer.

  • C – Heavy truck: For heavier trucks without a weight limit.

  • CE – Heavy truck with heavy trailer: For vehicle combinations without a weight limit.
