Get a snowmobile driving license

If you want to drive a snowmobile, you need a driving license. However, this does not apply if you have a Swedish driving license or tractor license issued before January 1, 2000. Here you will find out how to get a snowmobile driving license.

What is a snowmobile driving license?

A snowmobile driving license is required to legally drive a snowmobile in Sweden. An exception applies if you have a driver's license or tractor license issued before January 1, 2000, in which case you do not need a driver's license. The driver's license is personal and requires that you meet certain requirements regarding age, education and knowledge tests.

In order to obtain a driver's license, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years old.
  • Have completed an approved training course.
  • Have passed a knowledge test.

How do I apply for a driver's license?

The process for obtaining a snowmobile driver's license consists of three steps:

  1. Take a course with an approved trainer The course must be at least 10 hours long, of which at least 3 hours must be practical driving. The course includes, among other things:
  • Vehicle knowledge.
  • Traffic rules for snowmobiles.
  • Road safety and risk awareness.
  • Personal conditions that affect driving.
  1. Pass a knowledge test The knowledge test consists of questions about vehicle knowledge, traffic rules, safety and the driver's personal circumstances. You must answer at least 80% of the questions correctly to be approved.

  2. Apply for your driver's license Once you have passed the knowledge test, the trainer will report this to the Swedish Transport Agency. You will then receive an application form and a payment slip for the driver's license itself.

What does the training include?

The driver's license training consists of both theoretical and practical elements:

  • Theory:

  • The function and use of the snowmobile.

  • Traffic rules and safety on snowmobile trails.

  • Risks and how to prevent accidents.

  • Environmental aspects linked to snowmobile driving.

  • Practice:

  • Basic maneuvering.

  • Driving in different terrain conditions.

  • Understanding of safety equipment and load securing.

What is included in the knowledge test?

The knowledge test tests your knowledge in several areas and must be taken by an approved trainer:

  • Number of questions: The test contains between 25 and 35 questions.
  • Pass result: You must get at least 80% correct to be approved.
  • Content:
  • Traffic rules for snowmobiles.
  • Vehicle knowledge.
  • Road safety and risk awareness.
  • Environment and responsibility when driving.

The test is theoretical, and all practice driving must be done together with the trainer. Private practice driving is not permitted.

What happens after the training?

When you have passed the training and the knowledge test, the results are reported to the Swedish Transport Agency. You will then receive:

  • An application form and a payment card.
  • Ability to start driving a snowmobile immediately after registration, if you have a valid ID with you.

Please note that you must apply for and pay for the driver's license within one year. If you do not do this, you will lose your eligibility and will have to go through the process again.

Special rules and exceptions

There are special rules that apply in certain situations:

  • Snowmobile safari: You are allowed to drive a snowmobile without a driver's license if:

  • You have a driver's license or tractor license.

  • The group consists of a maximum of 10 drivers.

  • The trip is led by a person with a snowmobile driver's license.

  • The trip follows a predetermined route.

  • Driving license revocation: The driving license can be revoked in the event of traffic violations, such as speeding or reckless driving.

  • Exceptions to the rules: In emergency situations, such as rescue operations, some rules may be overridden.
