The professional certificate of competence (YKB) is a requirement to drive a bus professionally within the EU and EEA. To get it, you must complete a basic training course and pass a written test at the Swedish Transport Administration. What is YKB passenger transport?

YKB passenger transport applies to drivers with D and DE qualifications who want to drive professional passenger transport. It was introduced as a requirement on September 10, 2008 and ensures that drivers have the right competence in safe driving, legislation and passenger service.

The professional competence certificate is valid for five years and must then be renewed through further training.

Exemptions from YKB passenger transport

Certain transports are exempt from the YKB requirement. For example:

  • Driving in connection with emergency situations (ambulance, rescue services).
  • Transport of own material where driving is not the driver's main occupation.
  • Test drives or technical development work on vehicles.

How do I take YKB passenger transport?

To take the YKB passenger transporter you need to:

  1. Complete a basic training course.
  2. Pass a written test at the Swedish Transport Administration.

Length of the basic training course

  • 280 hours: For drivers under 23 years of age.
  • 140 hours: For drivers who are 23 years of age or older.

The training includes at least 10–20 hours of driving practice depending on the length of the training.

After five years, the YKB must be renewed through a continuing education course that covers a total of 35 hours.

Structure of the continuing education course

  • Sub-courses: Five sub-courses of at least 7 hours each.
  • Distance education: A maximum of 12 hours may be completed remotely.

The continuing education course can also renew the YKB for freight transport, if you have both qualifications.

The knowledge test for YKB passenger transport

The knowledge test is conducted at the Swedish Transport Administration and consists of:

  • Number of questions: 65 questions, of which 5 are test questions that are not included in the result.
  • Pass result: At least 48 correct out of 60 points.
  • Examination time: 50 minutes.

Customized exams

If you have special needs, you can apply for:

  • Oral exam: Where an examiner reads out the questions and answer options.
  • Extended exam time: The regular exam time is extended by 50%.
