What is CE qualification?

The CE license entitles you to drive:

Heavy truck with heavy trailer: Vehicle combinations where the truck has license C and the trailer has no weight restriction.
Light trailer: Vehicle combinations with a total weight of up to 750 kg.

CE is the highest license for trucks and is often required in professional life for transport where large trailers are used, such as in logistics, long-distance transport and construction.

The relationship between C and CE

To get a CE, you must already have license C, which means that you must first have a heavy truck license before you can expand to a heavy truck with a heavy trailer.

How do I apply for a driver's license permit?

To get a CE driving license, you need a driving license permit for group 2. The process includes:

Apply to the Swedish Transport Agency. Use the Swedish Transport Agency's e-service to fill out a health declaration.
Medical certificate and eye examination. A medical certificate is required to show that you meet the medical requirements, and the eye examination must be performed by an optician or doctor.

What does the CE training include?

The CE qualification training includes both theoretical and practical elements that are adapted to handle large and complex vehicle combinations.

Theoretical training

The theoretical part builds on your knowledge from the C qualification and includes:

Load securing: How to secure large and heavy loads correctly and safely.
Vehicle combinations: Technology and function of heavy vehicle combinations.
Road safety: Risk awareness and accident prevention.
Driving and rest times: Rules for professional drivers and the use of tachographs.
Environmental awareness: Techniques for driving in an environmentally friendly and efficient manner.

Practical training

The practical part consists of:

Manoeuvring vehicle combinations: Exercises for reversing, turning and handling trailers in tight spaces.
Driving in traffic: Driving in different traffic environments and under varying conditions.
Safety check: Checking the truck and trailer before driving.

The knowledge test for CE

The knowledge test is written at the Swedish Transport Administration and is specific to CE authorisation. It consists of:

Number of questions: 60 questions (of which 5 are test questions that do not count).
Pass score: At least 44 correct.
Test time: 40 minutes.

The test covers topics such as:

Vehicle combinations and load securing.
Traffic regulations for heavy vehicles.
Driving and rest times.

The CE driving test

The driving test consists of:

Safety check: You show that you can control the truck and trailer, including the clutch and brake system.
Maneuvering test: Reversing with a trailer and other maneuvering.
Driving in traffic: You drive in different traffic environments and show that you can handle the vehicle safely.

Age requirements and rules

21 years: To take the CE license, you must be 21 years old.
Exception: If you take a professional driver's training course (YKB), you can take a CE driving license from the age of 18.

In addition to CE, there are several other qualifications that may be relevant:

C – Heavy truck: Basic qualification required to take CE.
C1 – Medium truck: For vehicles with a total weight of up to 7,500 kg.
C1E – Medium truck with heavy trailer: For vehicle combinations up to 12,000 kg.
YKB Goods transport: Required if you plan to work professionally as a truck driver.
