What is B96?
With an extended B license (B96) you are allowed to drive:
-
Passenger car or light truck with a maximum total weight of 3,500 kg.
-
Trailer where the combined total weight of the car and trailer is a maximum of 4,250 kg.
Unlike a regular B license, which limits the total weight to 3,500 kg, the B96 gives you the opportunity to drive heavier combinations without having to take a theory test.
-
B (Passenger car): For car and trailer with a combined total weight of up to 3,500 kg.
-
BE (Passenger car with heavy trailer): For trailer combinations where the total weight of the trailer is a maximum of 3,500 kg.
Do I need a driver's license permit for the B96?
No, you do not need a driver's license permit to take an extended B license.
What does the B96 training include?
The B96 training focuses on the practical skills required to drive heavier trailer combinations. You do not need to take a theory test, but the driving test is more extensive than for a regular B driving license.
Practical training
- Safety check: Check the technical condition of the car and trailer, including brakes, lighting and tires.
- Load securing: Ensure that the load is correctly and securely anchored to avoid accidents.
- Maneuvering: Reversing with a trailer and driving in tight spaces.
- Driving in traffic: Handle the trailer combination in different traffic situations, such as city traffic, country roads and motorways.
What does the B96 driving test include?
The driving test for B96 is carried out at the Swedish Transport Administration and consists of two parts:
-
Safety check
You demonstrate that you can carry out a safety check of both the car and trailer. This includes checking the brakes, tyres and clutch.
-
Driving with a trailer
While driving, you must demonstrate that you can handle the vehicle combination safely and effectively in different traffic environments. The test includes elements such as:
- Reversing with a trailer.
- Driving in different traffic environments, including city and country roads.
- Handling the weight and stability of the vehicle combination.
The difference between B96 and BE
It is important to understand the difference between B96 and BE, as these qualifications are often confused:
- B96 (Extended B): Requires only one driving test. Gives the right to drive a car and trailer with a combined total weight of up to 4,250 kg.
- BE: Requires both a theory test and a driving test. Gives the right to drive trailers with a total weight of up to 3,500 kg, regardless of the weight of the car, which makes BE more suitable for heavier trailer combinations.
If you are unsure which qualification suits you best, you can contact a driving school for advice.
