You also cannot take or book a theory test or driving test if you do not have a valid driving license permit.
To apply for a driving license permit, you need to follow two steps:
Apply via the Swedish Transport Agency You apply digitally via the Swedish Transport Agency's e-service for driving license or by filling out a form. In the application, you fill out a health declaration that contains questions about your health and lifestyle. These questions help the Swedish Transport Agency assess whether you meet the requirements to become a safe driver.
Perform an eye examination with an optician or doctor The eye examination is a mandatory requirement for obtaining a driving license and can only be performed by an optician or doctor. During the examination, your visual acuity is measured, and you are also asked to answer questions about your medical history. The certificate is then sent digitally to the Swedish Transport Agency by the person conducting the examination.
If you wear glasses or contact lenses, these must be used during the examination. This ensures that your vision meets the requirements for driving a vehicle safely.
The Swedish Transport Agency sets two types of requirements that you must meet in order to obtain a driving license:
Medical requirements You must not have any diseases or conditions that may negatively affect your ability to drive, such as vision problems, epilepsy or heart problems. In some cases, you may need to supplement your application with a medical certificate.
Personal requirements The Swedish Transport Agency will review your background to ensure that you are a reliable driver. This means that you must not have any serious traffic violations or alcohol or drug abuse in your history.
Once your driving license permit has been approved, you can start practice driving. You can choose to practice driving privately or with a driving instructor at a driving school. If you want to practice driving privately, you and your supervisor must complete a supervisor training course together. The supervisor must also be approved by the Swedish Transport Agency.
The driving license permit is valid for five years from the date of issue. During this time, you can use it to obtain a driver's license for different vehicle types.
