What does the swing rule mean?

The turning rule is fundamental in traffic and something every driver must have knowledge of in order to obtain their driving license. You could say that it acts as an invisible traffic police officer at every intersection. The main purpose of the rule is to create order and safety on the roads and reduce the risk of accidents.

When you as a driver are about to turn left at an intersection, you have to give way to all oncoming traffic. This applies to both green and red lights. Even when you have a green signal, this is invalidated by the swing rule.

The turning rule does not only apply when we turn left, it also applies when we intend to turn right and need to cross the cycle path. This may seem obvious, but in stressful situations, it can sometimes be easy to forget.

When we talk about roundabouts, it is even more important to remember the turning rule, especially in Sweden where roundabouts are common. It is always you who leaves the roundabout who must give way, for cars and cyclists who are in circulation.

Mastering the turning rule is therefore extremely important, not only to pass the driver's license, but also to be a safe driver in traffic. Misunderstanding or forgetting the swing rule can lead to very dangerous situations and potential accidents.

Remember, the turning rule is the invisible traffic light that guides our way forward. By following it, we ensure not only our own safety, but also the safety of other road users.
