Learning styles
By learning styles, we mean the different ways in which you acquire knowledge. In driving, there are mainly three different learning styles that are common.
- Deep learning - You study until you understand the reason why something is the way it is, you understand the background and ask new questions to gather more information. This means that you retain the knowledge in a completely different way.
- Surface learning – You take quizzes in apps and learn the answer to the questions, rather than why the answer is what it is. It is easy to forget what you have learned through surface learning and many who fail the theory test have used surface learning.
- Overlearning - You do something, or practice so much, that it happens automatically. Overlearning is common among experienced drivers. It is therefore common for a supervisor to suddenly find it difficult to explain how they perform a certain manoeuvre during practice driving, due to overlearning.
