What is nitric oxide? We explain what this gas is, how it is formed and its impact on humans and other information.
Nitrogen oxide or nitrogen monoxide, chemically coated NOx, is a gas that is toxic in concentrations exceeding 30 ppm. It is formed when burned in air. Nitric oxide is irritating to the skin and eyes, and inhalation of large amounts can lead to death. It is formed when we use coal, oil and natural gas to drive a car, for example. in 2021, 33% of the total emissions of nitrogen oxides in Sweden came from road transport. However, newer cars have fewer emissions, so overall there is a gradual reduction in nitrogen oxide as older cars are taken out of traffic.
