Facts
Freezing rain forms when the temperature is below 0 degrees Celsius. This leads to the rain freezing immediately when it hits the cold road surface. It can also occur when the rain forms in warm air but later cools down in the cold air that is closer to the road.
This leads to severe slippery conditions and it is of the utmost importance to be careful if the car's thermometer shows minus degrees and any precipitation looks like rain, instead of snow.
