Vehicle tax is a fee you pay to the state through the Swedish Transport Agency. It is mandatory for all vehicles (which are not decommissioned or only temporarily registered) and has been levied since 1922.
The purpose is that road users in this way help to pay for other road maintenance, among other things. The tax is calculated through a number of different factors such as the year the vehicle was manufactured, what type of vehicle it is, and whether the owner lives in a sparsely populated municipality.
