The zipper principle, or gear principle, is a principle to be applied in situations where traffic is dense and two lanes merge into one lane. The basic idea of the principle is that every second car drives and it is a mutual interaction that applies.
The goal of the zipper principle is to maintain a flow in traffic and to reduce the risk of, or completely avoid traffic jams.
