Engine oil is a lubricating oil intended for internal combustion engines. It is usually made from petroleum.
An engine oil has several functions. The main one is lubrication, i.e. keeping the friction surfaces in the engine separate. But an engine oil also helps to cool the engine, prevent corrosion and keep it clean from soot and other things.
