Handbrake

In road vehicles, the handbrake, also known as the parking brake or emergency brake, is a mechanism used to keep the vehicle safe and motionless when parked. Parking brakes often consist of a traction mechanism attached to a cable that is connected to two wheel brakes.

On older cars, only the rear wheels are braked via a cable. However, newer cars have an electric handbrake that engages all wheels.
