Mobile telephony and risks

According to several studies, it is common for motorists to talk on a mobile phone while driving, which is also stated to be the second most common distraction when driving after changing radio settings.

Talking on a mobile phone generally generates a more dangerous driving style in that car drivers are more likely to take greater risks in traffic, which can be exemplified by driving faster than the speed limits allow, having a more aggressive driving style, more often breaking traffic rules such as driving against both stop signs and red lights.

Texting in connection with driving affects, like calls, the driver's driving performance in the form of both longer reaction time and braking time, uneven distance to other cars, poorer control over the car's direction of travel and increases the risk of traffic accidents. Furthermore, studies indicate that drivers who text are more likely to unintentionally change lanes and to drive more erratically

In 2021, almost 18,300 people were fined for using a mobile phone while driving. It is therefore still common today for people to use the phone to answer text messages or make calls in traffic, despite the many risks that this entails.
