Power steering

What does power steering mean? We explain what a power steering system is, what purpose it fulfils and how to detect faults with it.

Power steering is a system that makes the steering wheel easier to turn and the car easier to steer. The vast majority of cars on our roads are equipped with power steering. It is hydraulic (with servo oil) on slightly older cars and electric on newer ones. If the car feels heavy-duty, there is something wrong with the power steering. Older cars that do not have servo at all on the steering instead have a larger steering wheel and more turns between full steering wheel strokes.
