How much does the braking distance increase in relation to speed?

The braking distance increases squarely in relation to the speed. For every time you multiply the vehicle's speed, you make a square increase in the braking distance.

  • 2 x vehicle speed = 4 x braking distance
  • 4 x vehicle speed = 16 x braking distance

Braking distance is the total distance traveled by the vehicle, from the time you react and act, until the vehicle stops.
