The folding knife effect occurs if the car brakes better than the trailer attached to the car does on slippery roads. In simpler terms, the car and trailer fold like a folding knife and then become impossible to control and steer.
To avoid the knife effect, it is important to have matching tires on both trailer and car, for example, the car has studded tires, the trailer should also have it.
