The gear principle, or the flash-lock principle, is a principle that must be applied in situations where traffic is dense and two lanes merge into one lane. The basic idea of the principle is that every second car drives and that there is a mutual interaction that applies. The goal is to maintain a flow in traffic and avoid longer stops for one lane.
