Safety distance means that you must keep an appropriate distance when, for example, you drive past parked cars, cyclists and pedestrians. This is very important because there is a risk that the cyclist will wobble, the pedestrian will fall or that a person will open the door of a parked car. If there is not enough lateral distance, there is a risk of a collision with one of these.
