Seat belt
Seat belts are the most important safety feature found in a car, seat belts are found in both the front seat and the back seat. This detail saves us from life-threatening accidents that can happen along the way. We have two-point seat belts that reduce the risk of injury by 20% and then we have three-point seat belts that reduce the risk of injury by 50%. We also have something called a belt tensioner and its function is to tighten the seat belt. The combination of three-point seat belts and belt tensioners means that the risk of injury is reduced by about 55% instead of 50%. The law in Sweden says that everyone who is in a car must wear a seat belt and this is precisely to protect themselves when an accident occurs. This law applies to adults and children, children who are shorter than 135 cm are required to have a special protective device, such as a baby seat, car seat or booster seat/pillow. Seat belts should be used in the following way:
- It is important that the lower part of the seat belt sits over the hip bone down towards the thighs and not over the stomach. If the lower part of the seat belt is placed over the stomach, there is a great risk that the lower part of the belt will penetrate the stomach in connection with a collision and can cause internal bleeding.
- The seat belt should always be snug against the body, as it gives the best effect in this way.
- When you are going to drive a car, it is important that you do not have any thick outerwear on, this is precisely because if you should have it, the seat belt is not placed in a correct way. The seat belt usually ends up wrong when you are wearing thick outerwear. The bottom of the seat belt should sit under the outer clothing over the hip bone down to the thighs.
- Another important point about seat belts is that the seat belt should not be damaged or twisted during use, and this is precisely because if an accident occurs, there is a risk that the belt will be torn off in connection with the collision.
- When you are pregnant, it is important that you use the belt correctly, because now you are not only protecting your life, but also the life of the fetus that is in your belly. The belt should be used in the following way, the diagonal belt should go at the side of the stomach, between the breasts and close to the neck. The lower part of the belt should be placed as far down towards the thighs as possible and this will prevent the fetus from being pinched. As you begin to approach the end of your pregnancy, it is important that you do not drive.
