Speed blind

Becoming speed blind is when a person's ability to judge their own speed deteriorates after traveling at high speeds. Speed blindness can pose a road safety risk, especially when a vehicle driver leaves a road at high speed and enters a built-up area.

The risk of becoming speed blind is greatest when driving on large and wide roads, such as motorways. It is then possible to underestimate your braking distance or the distance to the car in front, for example.

If you know that there is a high risk of becoming speed blind, you should as a habit regularly look at the speedometer, especially before taking an exit or if you see that a queue is starting to form in front of you.
