What does base velocity mean?

Here you will find the answer to what base speeds mean, as well as in which situations different base speeds usually start to apply and expire.

The base speed is the speed that the driver should follow if there are no speed signs.

  • Base speed inside built-up area: 50 km/h
  • Base speed outside built-up area: 70 km/h

These are to be considered as general speed limits in situations where there is a lack of speed signs.

In built-up areas, there are usually signs showing that the speed limit is 30 km/h or 40 km/h. However, if there are no signs, the general base speed of 50 km/h applies.
