What is diesel? We explain the definition of diesel and take a closer look at its constituents. Learn more about this popular fuel.
Diesel is mainly produced by distilling crude oil in refineries. The hydrocarbons in diesel are heavier than those in gasoline, so diesel is less volatile than gasoline, but more volatile than heavy fuel oil or asphalt. Diesel is not strictly chemically defined, but is thus a term for motor fuel oils used for the operation of diesel engines and which are mainly obtained from petroleum.
