What does the duty to report mean? We explain the meaning behind the word and how it affects you in practice if a crime occurs, or if you suspect a crime.

The duty to report means that you have a statutory obligation, with the risk of criminal liability, to contact the police when you become aware of a crime or a suspicion that a crime has been committed. The duty to report applies not only when you witness a crime, but also when you suspect that a crime may have occurred or is about to occur.
