Emergency stop

Emergency stop means that you need to stop where you are not normally allowed or should stop, for example on a road. In the event that you have had to make an emergency stop, you need to mark your car to warn other road users that you are parked there.

You should mark your car with a warning triangle if you have parked on a roadway where it may be difficult for other road users to see the car in time. The placement of the warning triangle is then about 50-100 meters from your car to give road users plenty of time to pay attention to you and your car.

You can use hazard warning lights to further signal to other drivers that your car is on the roadway. It is still your obligation to place a triangle or two to mark your vehicle even if you are using hazard lights.

If you have a fault with your vehicle on the motorway/expressway, keep as far to the right as you can and continue, if possible, to the nearest exit road. If you have to stop, drive or roll the car out as far as possible on the hard shoulder. Once you stop there, put out a warning triangle and allow any passengers to get to safety on the side of the road.

In particular, it is important to make sure that the children cannot get into the roadway. Avoid sitting in the car and waiting as accidents can occur where other road users collide with the parked car.
