What is the greenhouse effect? We explain what the greenhouse effect is and what causes it, as well as how it relates to road traffic.
The greenhouse effect means that the atmosphere retains heat energy from the sun, similar to how the glass walls in a greenhouse retain heat in a greenhouse. This effect occurs partly because of gases in the atmosphere that capture heat radiation, these are called greenhouse gases. The majority of greenhouse gases from the transport sector come from road traffic, where emissions from passenger cars and heavy vehicles dominate. It is therefore important to use environmentally conscious driving to reduce emissions as much as possible.
