The big turn

What does the big turn mean? We explain what this traffic rule for cyclists and moped riders means in practice for other road users.

The Big Turn is a traffic rule that is specially intended only for cyclists and in some cases also mopeds. This concerns road junctions with several lanes. When turning left, motor vehicles such as cars often have to stick to a lane that is on the left before they are allowed to turn left. However, cyclists are not dependent on these lanes but are allowed to stay to the right and can still make a left turn. This is what is known as the big turn. Other traffic must therefore be attentive when a cyclist is at such a junction, as he or she may well make a left turn in this way.
