Tread depth

What does tread depth mean? We explain what tread depth is, what affects it and the minimum tread depth on summer and winter tyres.

Tread depth means the depth of the tires. New tyres usually have a depth of between 8-9 mm. This depth decreases as the tires wear out. Tyres with a tread depth between 3-4 mm have clearly reduced wet properties. The minimum permitted tread depth on summer tyres is 1.6 mm. On winter tyres, the minimum permitted tread depth is 3.0 mm.
