What does vehicle width mean? We explain what is meant by the width of vehicles, what rules exist for how wide vehicles can be and the average width.
The width of a vehicle is its dimensions from its right side, to the left. On average, a passenger car is about 1.9 metres wide if you count the rear-view mirrors. A vehicle driven on a public road may not be wider than 260 cm including the load, and the load may not extend a maximum of 20 cm on each side (regardless of the vehicle width). If the load is indivisible, such as a boat, the width may be up to 310 cm, provided that the combination is properly marked.
