In short, deep learning means that you have a greater understanding of the knowledge you intend to take in, you can more easily understand and put things in context and not just memorize and later forget about them. For example, you understand why a certain traffic rule is designed in that specific way. Surface learning is the opposite of deep learning. You learn facts without the understanding behind the facts, and therefore quickly forget what you have learned.
