Glossary
Ethanol is an alcohol that can be used as fuel for internal combustion engines in e.g. passenger cars. In Sweden, the mixture E85 is sold, with about 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline in the summer. In winter, the gasoline share is temporarily increased to 25% to increase volatility and facilitate take-off at low temperatures.
Those who refuelled with ethanol E85 reduced their climate impact by almost 50 percent in 2021, compared to if they had refuelled with petrol.
Ethanol contains less energy per litre than petrol. When you drive on E85, consumption therefore increases by just over 30 percent compared to when you drive on petrol. on the other hand, the price per litre of E85 is lower. In the end, it will sometimes be cheaper, sometimes more expensive to drive on E85.
