Glossary
A fuel is a substance that can be converted by combustion or other process to release usable energy. The most common process is combustion, like the internal combustion engines found in the majority of passenger cars that use gasoline and diesel as fuel.
Petrol and diesel are fossil fuels and are mineral-based. This means that they are made from fossil raw materials – crude oil formed from decayed plant parts and which has been buried deep in the bedrock for millions of years. When the fuel is burned in the engine, exhaust gases are formed, which include carbon dioxide.
