Glossary
Unleaded gasoline is an unleaded gasoline that contains up to 10% ethanol. With Sweden's entry into the EU on 1 January 1995, lead was banned in all car petrol from 1 March of the same year
Since 1 August 2021, petrol stations in Sweden are obliged to sell petrol containing 5 to 10% ethanol (E5) and (E10) in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Prior to that, unleaded 95-octane petrol normally contained 5% ethanol (E5). Since 2010, all new petrol cars sold in Sweden must be able to handle E10.
Many classic cars cannot run on unleaded petrol. Classic cars that do not meet this are referred to 98-octane petrol (E5), which contains no more than 5% ethanol, although usually a significantly lower level.
The levels of lead in the environment have plummeted since the advent of unleaded gasoline.
